Getting a good search engine ranking is first and foremost about having quality content in your website. From our experience, many people we speak to in Malaysia seek to achieve No 1 position when launching their websites for the very first time.
This is usually an unrealistic expectation even if you have great content, as your need to allow time for incoming links to your website to grow and for your domain to age in the search engines.
In our Web Design section, we mentioned about the CLP Rule for Website Search Engine Optimization. CLP stands for:
- CONTENT
- LINKS
- PATIENCE
You will need to build up your credibility on the web. Just doing a good job with your web design and web content is not good enough.
In this article, we outline some tips on how to build up your content. If you have problem figuring out what to write on your website, here are a couple of suggestions on content building:
Product Reviews: Product reviews are great for most websites and even more so if you run an ecommerce website. You can do them yourself or have your customers write in to discuss how a particular product or service has helped them. Use them as testimonials, generate affiliate marketing income or use these as articles to build your website content.
Event Calendar: Calendars work well for businesses which have regular events and activities. For example, property websites can show upcoming viewing times; marketing companies can provide information on the latest launching event for their products. If you are running a community website, you can also allow your visitors to post their own events in your community calendar.
Tips & How-To Guides: People love tips and guides. If you are a tuition teacher offering your services online for example, why not include a tips section on how to answer exam questions effectively? You can also create a series of Tips and Guides to be The Tuition Expert in Malaysia. This may not sound glamorous, but if you’re highly visible online in your particular niche, then more than likely this will translate to sales, and you can afford to be glamorous OFF the Net! Tips can also be re-used in your newsletter to increase your online reach and build your mailing lost.
FAQs: You may not realize it but this is one of the easiest and best ways to build your website content. Precisely because it is content that your target audience wants to know. As you get questions from your readers, remember to add them to your FAQs and build up your content over time.
Problem Solving Content: People surf the web to look for information, buy something or do a transaction. The majority of surfers are looking for something specific and if you can solve problems for your visitors, you are giving them exactly what they are looking for. Say for example you sell furniture. Your visitor may be looking for decorating ideas for his office. Maybe the office is very small, and wall space is taken up with windows already. You can create a series of content showing pictures of problems and how your furniture can be used as to overcome your prospect’s problems.
Interviews: Interviewing an expert in your industry is a great way to build credible content. Send the expert a list of questions and let the expert answer in his or her own words. Let the expert know the purpose of the interview and always maintain your integrity in the process.
Web Design Issues in Content Development
When you build your website, consider how you wish to develop your content. Some of the above content is best developed using a database, while others can simply be included using static web page design. Speak to your web designer and outline your content building objectives. That way you plan ahead and can easily scale up your website when your are ready.
